What is KanaScript?

KanaScript is a native iOS app for learning Japanese hiragana and katakana through interactive quizzes and handwriting practice. It covers all 46 basic characters plus dakuten (voiced) and yōon (combination) characters.

Do I need to create an account?

No. KanaScript requires no account or sign-in. Your progress is stored locally on your device and is always available offline.

What iOS version do I need?

KanaScript requires iOS 17 or later.

What quiz types are available?

There are two quiz modes:

• Recognition (Kana → Romaji): A kana character is shown and you type the romaji pronunciation.
• Handwriting (Romaji → Kana): A romaji syllable is shown and you draw the correct kana character on the canvas.

Which character groups can I quiz on?

You can choose from:

• All — every character in the set
• Main (Gojūon) — the 46 core characters
• Dakuten — voiced consonant variants (が, ざ, だ…)
• Combination (Yōon) — combined sounds (きゃ, しゅ, ちょ…)

My romaji answer was marked wrong but I think it's correct.

Common alternate romanizations are accepted. For example, "si" and "shi" are both valid for し, and "ti" and "chi" for ち. If you believe a valid answer is being rejected, please contact support with the specific character and what you typed.

How does the handwriting quiz work?

Draw the kana character on the canvas using your finger. When you're ready, tap Submit to compare your drawing with the correct character. Then self-assess: tap Correct or Incorrect based on how well your drawing matched.

How do hints work?

Tap the Hint button while on the drawing canvas to reveal the next stroke of the character in red. Each press reveals one additional stroke. The button label shows your progress (e.g., "Hint 2/3"). Using any hints counts the question as incorrect, regardless of your self-assessment.

Can I undo strokes while drawing?

Yes. Use the undo button on the canvas toolbar to remove your last stroke, or the clear button to erase the entire drawing and start fresh.

How is my progress tracked?

KanaScript records correct and incorrect answers for each individual character, separately for each quiz type (Recognition and Handwriting). Your success rate is displayed at the end of each quiz session.

Can I reset my progress?

You can reset progress from the Settings screen inside the app. This will clear all recorded correct/incorrect counts.

Is my data backed up?

Progress is stored locally on your device. It is not currently synced to iCloud or any cloud service. Deleting the app will erase your progress.

What is Study Mode?

Study Mode provides full reference charts for hiragana and katakana. Tap any character in the chart to see its romaji pronunciation and stroke order animation.
